Today our bass player brought a compressor to the jam. Anyone heard of MOEN UNI-COMP? I've never heard of it before. His bass sounded awesome through his Acoustic amp, really growly and tight. I tried it on a few songs and let me tell you this pedal has some serious mojo.
As a compressor it's extremely transparent, you can't really hear that it's compressing, you just get the added sustain. The attack/release times and curves are exceptionally well tuned for guitar in that you still have the punch there, and absolutely no choking. And no noise. The tone however is not transparent at all! It saturates the signal in a very pleasant way and fatten it up like I've never heard anything else do before. Not like a static EQ, it reacts to the playing in some way I can't describe. I can tell all of you guys playing single coils you'll be blown away by what this pedal does to the tone. Still 100% single coil sound but very lively, powerful and heavy. I had it set to do very little compression and I left it on all the time. When I gave it back to our bass player my sound suddenly turned thin, ice-picky, plonky and weak in comparison. I think this is the best pedal I've ever tried, all categories. I immediately went to ebay and bought two of them ![]() |

Yeah it did! I rarely use compressors between guitar and amp. And with the VM a compressor ruins everything even more, But not this one, it just adds good things.
I got two of them for a couple of reasons. One of them is always gonna be enabled, set to no or very very little compression, just there for the tone. The other is gonna be set to actually do compression when I want that. Maybe I'm gonna get a third to put in my gig bag so that I'm never without one no matter where I am. It's definitely gonna be a permanent part of the stuff that shapes my tone. |

I am a fan of compressors and they defintly have their place in your chain for certain guitar work especially when using one of my Plexi amps to smooth the brightness. However I agree there is a lot of difference between compressors and the way the "squish" your sound. I will have to check these out, I currently use a HomeBrew compressor and really like it (little in - little out) I find it interesting that it has sort of a eq with it.
Quote: A great feature on the Uni-Comp is the Bias (EQ) Knob where you can balance the frequency response from Low to High..... you can even use it with a Bass Guitar! -- Sun Jan 10, 2010 9:33 am -- You know I had never heard of these Moen pedals before but they offer some intersting pedals. I found this youTube page with video demos fo their stuff, I think it is worth checking out. I think they are a company from Japan, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PsK-_Zja ... _embedded# _________________ My Gear Surf's Jukebox

Same here... never heard of Moen before. It's fun finding new stuff.
That Bias (EQ) knob on the Uni-Comp works really well. If you turn it counter clock wise it adds a great deal of lows and saturation, turning it the other way it gets really bright, but in the midrange rather than trebly range. Anyway it does more than a simple EQ does. In the 80's I used compressors a lot but that was my ultra clean chorus period, the typical west coast pop sound. I'm past that. I can understand your need of taming the Plexis Surf, I think you might like this pedal as well. That Jimi Zero Vibe didn't sound bad at all! |

I actually find that when using a strat, a compressor (set gently) with the VM on low range into an overdrive (OCD) or a fuzz really makes the amp sing for leads. Very Gilmourish. |

You're welcome!
One year since my post about this pedal, and it's still sitting between my strat and VM, enabled all the time! ![]() |

I didn't get a chance to try it out blues but you all have me thinking about trying one out it sounds like a great pedal with a strat. Its just that my board is pretty full right now I don't think I have any room for it. It sounds like a winner and the price is reasonable. Thanks for posting. |

Blues you got me gassin on that Moen now. Where do you have it in your signal chain? Or do you use it as a stand alone?
Thanks |

Thanks Hi, The signature in my profile was a little full.( only 500 charakters )I squeezed it in. The pedal is just after my tc polytuner(not standalone) Well my selfmade pedalboard is kinda huge 90cm x40cm . Greetings, bluesbrother. _________________ usa fender deluxe stratocaster epiphone les paul standard 1959 limited edition . epiphone BB King Lucille >> behringer xenyx 502 mixer>>behringer 2231A truth monitors v>>>avid eleven rack with Thoman hardcase 2U>>behringer FCB-1010 midifloorboard with eureka sound 11-prom v>>>boss e-band JS-8 ( 32 GB for backing tracks) v>>>beyer dynamic DT 880 Pro headphones. |

That Jimi Zero Vibe did sound pretty good especially for the price! -- Thu Feb 17, 2011 12:12 am -- O.K. I never been a fan of compressors and I also never used them in my pedal chain at all. However after reading this post and the rave reviews Tony and Bluesbrother gave this pedal I went ahead and took a chance on this pedal. This week we are in Revival at my Church and i got a chance to really check this pedal out and it is a great pedal. Like Blues said it gets that 3D like liquid blues tone all day Wind Cries Mary, Hey joe, Little Wing, You can get some nice Gilmore stuff as well. It just has a really fat nice tone. The only negative thing about it is its pretty big. So now I have to re wire my board I went with the Lava Cable Kit so now I can fit all my pedals on my small board. It sounds really killer pushing a overdrive/distortion pedal too. I found myself keeping it on most of the time. Great for funky licks and rhythm playing too. If anyone out there is looking for a great compressor at a reasonable price you really can't go wrong with this pedal. Like Blues said its the bomb. ![]() |
