Anyone replaced the stock EL34 valves with something else? I was thinking about trying the JJ's EL34L.

Haven't even opened it up yet to check the bias. But I definitely plan to try both E34Ls and KT77s in it. Both of those always sound better to me than a regular EL34. My favorite is the KT77.
Got the tubes but haven't yet felt the urge to open the amp and remove the chassis. But I know darn well they will probably sound better to me when I do install them. Go ahead and try them and then post your results. In the unlikely event you don't prefer the E34Ls you can use them for spares. |

Damn, I didn't even think about the KT77's That might even be a better way to go.
On a side note. I played an outdoor venue a couple of weekends ago and was able to open up the JMD and really get the valves working. Sounded freakin awesome! _________________ www.shotgunoverdose.com |

Well, now you got me thinking about those tubes it probably won't be too long before I start meddling with them.
Kind of nice not to need to get caught up in tube substitutions in the preamp for a change. I'm curious which of the preamp models you were using on your gig. Any effects in front or in the loop? That's good to hear that it sounded so good in your outdoor gig. I've used mine in a few jam settings with friends, nothing serious. I used most of the preamps, but that was to show off the amp. I wonder how Mety is getting on with using his in live gigs. Some time back he said he was going to start using his JMD in his shows. |

I've just put JJ KT77s in my JMD100. I much prefer them - a little smoother and less compressed.

For my gigs with Sabbatica I still use my beloved VM. It's absolutely perfect! I bought the JMD for my side project, a band doing the poppier side of rock like "The Police" "The Cars" "Joe Jackson" "Paul McCartney" etc... On paper, the amp sounded ideal for that situation, but having used it on a couple of gigs, I'm afraid I was a bit non-plussed. I've since used it for my NWOBHM band (Hollow Ground) cos we've been rehearsing for a couple of upcoming gigs in Europe. I mainly used the JMP-1 pre-amp and liked it a helluva lot more in that situation! Maybe swapping out some poweramp valves is a good idea for me... Hmmmmm Or maybe I've simply been spoiled over the last few years by the fantastic tones of my Vintage Modern! ![]() _________________ Gibson Les Paul 25/50 Anniversary Custom, Les Paul Custom, Les Paul Standard, SG Special Faded.
